The seniors at St. Martin de Porres High School made history on Saturday, June 7.  They were the first graduating class of this school that opened four years ago providing an afforadable  college prep curriculum for students from families of modest means.

All 50 seniors have been accepted at colleges. Follow this link to see where they will attend. Many will be the first in their families to attend. Some are getting full scholarships.

The very first Commencement Ceremony speech of Saint Martin de Porres was given by City Councilman Honorable Joe Cimperman.  The Hon. Cimperman told the graduates, “Today the promise of you is fulfilled. Today it’s not just the promise of you, it is you. Thank you for being one of 50 heroes who walk among us.”

Two awards were given to  graduating seniors: The St. Martin Award and The Rev. Robert J. Welsh, S.J., Work, Study, Serve, Lead, Pray Award. The St. Martin Award is granted to the graduating senior who best demonstrates the qualities of our patron, St. Martin de Porres. Gary Martin consistently demonstrated the generosity, humility, service, peacemaking and grace of St. Martin. Like St. Martin, he worked hard and made the best of every opportunity, accepting each responsibility with gratitude and a generous heart, giving without counting the cost.

The Rev. Robert J. Welsh, S.J., Award is given to those students who best live our school’s motto- Work, Study, Serve, Lead, Pray – in the spirit of Fr. Welsh. The
winners of this Award were: Dominique Aaron, Kallie Krawczonek, Gary Martin and Samantha Musser.

The George Gund and Cleveland named Saint Martin de Porres High School as one of 13 Cleveland schools that are making a difference.  The report, "Cleveland Schools that are Making a Difference,” highlights 13 urban schools recognized by independent researchers for inspired leadership, thoughtful curriculum, innovative instructional practices and well-cultivated community and parental involvement.

All 13 schools selected for this report met several key criteria: they were operating in the 2004–05 school year; the majority of students were economically disadvantaged; and they were demonstrating progress in student achievement gains as evidenced from state report card data, value-added student achievement data, standardized test scores and graduation rates.

Researchers spent months conducting site visits, reviewing data and interviewing students, teachers, principals and parents. They looked at six dimensions that research shows are critical factors in positively impacting student learning: shared vision; strong curriculum and instructional methods; use of multiple data types to drive instruction and student outcomes; presence of a nurturing, safe learning environment; and positive professional development opportunities for teachers and staff.

Saint Martin de Porres High School enters the national Schools That Can network.

Schools That Can is a national non-profit network of high-performing inner-city schools that currently prepares over 10,000 youths for their adult lives – with a vision to serve 25,000 students over the next three years.

Member schools graduate approximately 1,000 minority students per year, providing them with the academic skills they need to meet the challenges of high school, college and beyond. This means a significant increase in minority students who will have the potential to attend and graduate college.

The Schools That Can network includes a diverse group of urban schools throughout the country. However they all have one thing in common: Passionate, talented, determined leadership – men and women with high expectations and results-driven practices – who are committed to improving the lives of inner-city youth.
